A rescue dog who was dumped in the trash after suffering a miscarriage is finally learning what it means to be loved in her forever home.
In March, Ruby, the pit bull mix, who is thought to be around 2 to 3 years old, was found outside among a pile of trash and unwanted furniture. Alyssa Carnes, 32, was initially told about the sweet pup by her husband. But when the dog was still there waiting a week later, she knew she had to step in.
Carnes, of Indiana, believes that Ruby was abandoned around two weeks prior, telling Newsweek that having a miscarriage “was more than likely the reason she was dumped.”
Seeing Ruby out there in the elements broke Carnes’ heart, as it was clear that she’d been used for breeding until she was no longer useful. She took the dog in and spent time cleaning Ruby, feeding her, and of course, showing her real love.

“She had some sort of infection going on, which was worrying. She was also underweight, had feces matted into her tail, and dry urine all over her body,” Carnes said.
“We were told she was suffering a miscarriage and more than likely that’s why she was discarded. She had obvious signs of previous caesarean sections. It’s heart wrenching because she was used for profitable gain and then discarded,” she continued.
Ruby didn’t waste time settling into her new home, as she quickly showed Carnes just how grateful she was. The rescue pup is finally learning what it means to be in a happy home with a family who loves her.
Since being rescued last month, Ruby has now been spayed, so she’ll never have to be used for breeding again.
Carnes said: “She’s thriving now and truly loving her new life. She’s got a second chance at the beautiful life that she’s always deserved. She’s proof of how resilient dogs can be, and that they should never be dismissed.”
After welcoming Ruby into her home, Carnes shared a heartbreaking TikTok video (@twocraftycarnes) on March 10 showing the moment she was found amongst the trash. The clip has since gone viral with more than 268,200 views and 44,100 likes at the time of writing.
The footage of Ruby laying outside on some abandoned furniture was followed by clips and pictures of her loving life with her new family.
Carnes told Newsweek that Ruby’s story has had “a very overwhelming response,” which she never anticipated. Internet users were so moved by the dog’s incredible transformation.
While Ruby may be thriving now, the same can’t be said for millions of other dogs who are still searching for homes. If Ruby’s story accomplishes anything, Carnes hopes that it shows people to importance of spaying and neutering animals.
“We have to stop backyard breeding because the unfortunate truth is there are so many dogs like Ruby who just never get a second chance,” she said.
The viral video detailing Ruby’s rescue story has amassed over 1,000 comments on TikTok so far, as social media users praised Carnes for saving her life.
One comment reads: “Poor girl. Probably had her puppies taken right away and she was dumped. Thank you for giving her a great home.”
Another TikTok user wrote: “Thank you for saving her!! All animals want is to be loved and protected.”
While another person replied: “They do save us as much as we save them. Thank you for caring. I wish her a great life.”
