A new friendship between a dog and the neighbors’ children strengthened over the summer, but hearts broke after a recent video showed what happened when school started.
TikTok user @ewhuman96 told Newsweek that while walking her dog, Cara, around the neighborhood in the summer, they were often greeted by two kids. Enjoying the attention, Cara began looking forward to it.
“They are best friends and LOVE dogs!” Cara’s owner said. “They always come running up to her when they see us coming from our walk, and Cara loves them!”
They saw each other about five or six times over summer vacation, the dog owner said, and with each time her golden retriever would become more excited. However, now that school is back in session, Cara’s new friends are no longer available to play when she goes on her walks, and she “doesn’t understand.”

Yesterday’s TikTok video showed Cara holding onto hope that her friends would come out of the house. She sat in the driveway, ignoring her owner pulling at the leash. Her tail kept wagging in anticipation while her owner apologized.
Cara “stays there for a few minutes, and with some encouragement, she always moves on with me,” she said.
Cara’s owner said the pup will check the other driveway, since her two friends live in different houses, but she stopped filming before they arrived at the house.
“She does this now every time we pass their house,” she said.
With over 385,700 views and 51,000 likes in one day, people flooded the comment section, expressing their heartbreak because, in Cara’s mind, her friends do not want to see her, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
“Hmmm, unsure they need school. Surely this is more important,” joked one commenter.
“Oh my goodness, when she went back just in case…that broke my heart,” another commenter wrote.
“I hope they miss her just as much and spoil her with attention every time their parents allow them to go out and play with her,” a third person commented.
Other TikTok users suggested that she bring Cara back after school lets out or on the weekends for a better chance of seeing her friends.
