Multiple states are facing heavy rain and the threat of flash flooding over the Labor Day weekend, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service (NWS).
Why It Matters
Labor Day is a federal holiday that celebrates the American labor movement and the contributions of workers. It is often associated with outdoor gatherings, including barbecues and lakeside activities, and is often viewed as a symbolic end to the summer season.
The NWS has warned that flash flood danger could potentially pose a threat to travelers over the holiday weekend.
What To Know
“Areas of heavy rain are possible from the southern Plains to the Gulf over the next few days as we work through the holiday weekend,” the NWS wrote in a Thursday post on X.
A forecast map from the agency showed that states that could see “excessive” rainfall included Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.
Another post from the NWS’ Climate Prediction Center (CPC) on Thursday warned that western Texas as well as New Mexico could see instances of flash flooding and heavy rain on Friday and Saturday. Louisiana, Mississippi, and southwest Alabama were most at risk on Friday, according to the map.
“If traveling this weekend, make a plan before venturing out, and be sure to be aware of alternate routes in case you encounter flooded roadways, the NWS said Friday. “Remember, Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”

On Friday, a flood watch was already in effect for the northern half of northeast Texas, southeast Oklahoma, southwest Arkansas and northern Louisiana through Friday afternoon. Forecasters warned of “excessive, heavy rainfall” between two to three inches—with isolated higher amounts—that could lead to flooding in low-lying areas, rivers, creeks, and roads.

NWS Shreveport, Louisiana, wrote in a post on X, Friday: “Look for scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms this morning. Some of this rainfall could become excessive, especially across Bossier Parish thru sunrise.”
