Terry McLaurin is back for the Washington Commanders, but it’s not what you think.
The wide receiver has reportedly shown up at the team’s training facility this week after being confirmed as a holdout. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McLaurin can now be considered a “hold in.”
“McLaurin was spotted at the team’s training facility on Saturday, per sources,” Schefter reported on Sunday morning. “McLaurin arrived without a new deal but with some sort of ankle injury. Washington now is expected to place McLaurin on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list.”
Since McLaurin was not around the team, he was landing up to $50,000 per day in training camp. Now that he has reported, the fines won’t continue, according to ESPN.

Since the spring, McLaurin has been viewed as a potential holdout. Heading into the final season of his current contract, the 29-year-old wanted to lock in a new long-term deal before he continued his run in Washington.
Without a new deal in place, McLaurin was briefly at the Commanders’ OTAs. Eventually, he went into holdout mode, missing mandatory minicamp as a result.

Weeks went by without McLaurin and the Commanders working out a new deal. It got to a point where teams across the league started to wonder if McLaurin could be a potential trade candidate. Washington made it clear they wanted McLaurin back, but it’s taking plenty of time.
“We’ve had conversations recently and look to have more, and we’ll do everything we can in order to get a deal done,” said Commanders General Manager, Adam Peters. “You’re dealing with a really good player and person, and you never lose sight of that… make sure every conversation is straightforward and in good faith… our goal is to get a long-term deal done. He’s a great player and we want to keep him here.”
McLaurin’s situation has received plenty of attention around the Commanders’ camp, but key members of the team understand his stance and support the star receiver.
“This is just business in the NFL. You know, we know Terry’s working. We don’t really have to worry about him doing any of that, but at the end of the day, he’s still one of our brothers,” said Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels.
When will McLaurin and the Commanders figure out their future? It appears that the situation is still taking plenty of time to work itself out. At the very least, McLaurin is around the team as the Commanders prepare for the preseason.
