Bryson DeChambeau had a terrible first round at The Open Championship that has even jeopardized his chances of making the cut. To make matters worse, the two-time major champion found himself in one of the most embarrassing situations for any golfer.
DeChambeau got off to a good start at The Open, parring the first three holes. However, problems didn’t take long to appear, and on the fourth hole, he sent his tee shot completely wide left, 321 yards into the native area.
DeChambeau then looked for the green, but his shot veered once again, this time to the right, landing in the native area. He was already having a tough time on that hole, but it was there that his luck ran out.

The ball came to rest on a slope at a height more appropriate for a baseball swing than a golf swing. DeChambeau tried to hit his third shot, but it went completely blank, and the ball came to rest practically in the same spot.
Long story short, the Modesto, California, native ended up making a double bogey on the hole. From there, things went from bad to worse.
DeChambeau couldn’t even make a birdie throughout the round. He carded a bogey on the ninth hole, another double bogey on the 13th, and consecutive bogeys on the 17th and 18th, finishing with a terrible score of 7-over 78.
Bryson DeChambeau Needs to Go Low on Friday to Stay at Royal Portrush
This result placed him tied for 145th place in a field where 45 players scored even par or better. In other words, he needs to go really low in the score during the second round to be able to play the weekend.
The LIV Golf star has finished in the top six in five of the last seven major championships. This includes one win, in last year’s US Open, and two runner-up finishes.
However, Bryson DeChambeau missed the cut at the most recent major, this year’s US Open, and also at last season’s Open Championship at Royal Troon.
In seven Open appearances, DeChambeau has made four cuts and has only one top-10 finish, tied for eighth at the 2022 edition at St. Andrews.
