A Florida animal rescue is appealing for help in finding a home for one of its dogs after her story took another heartbreaking turn.
When Mama Eve first came into the care of the Mercy Full Project, a foster home-based animal rescue located in the Tampa Bay area, the dog was in a bad way.
“She came to us super-pregnant and was living outside before,” Isabelle Hucko from Mercy Full Project told Newsweek. “She gave birth to 10 babies in our care once she went into her foster home.”
Despite the difficulties she had faced in her short life already, Mama Eve nursed all 10 of her puppies into young canine adulthood. But what happened next was almost too much to bear.
“She has had to watch all 10 of her puppies get adopted,” Hucko said. “It’s clear that she missed them as they left her care. She was a great mom, and so seeing her part with the pups was so sad to see.”
Though each of her puppies left to loving families, Mama Eve was understandably bereft, particularly when she failed to follow them in finding a forever home.
Now, in a further twist to her heartbreaking story, the Mercy Full Project has shared heartbreaking footage from a recent adoption event where Mama Eve went ignored.
“Mama Eve just got home from another adoption event without a single person even wanting to pet her,” read the caption accompanying the video posted to the rescue’s TikTok @mercyfullproject.
It can often be difficult for rescue dogs to stand out from the crowd when it comes to catching the eye of a potential adopter.
A 2014 study in the journal Applied Animal Behavior Science found shelter visitors engage with just one dog per visit and that these interactions lasted an average of just eight minutes.
Though Mama Eve lives with a foster carer, meaning her situation isn’t quite the same, a similar scenario has played out at adoption events time and time again.
Hucko has her own theory as to why that is the case. “Mama Eve has struggled to get adopted mainly because nobody wants to adopt pit bulls due to the bad stereotype against them, even though she is the sweetest girl,” she said.
The hope is that this TikTok video and the efforts of everyone at the Mercy Full Project will help change that. There has certainly been a positive response to the video, with animal lovers flocking to comment on the clip.
“Can’t understand why [she hasn’t been adopted]. She’s so beautiful. Please give her a loving home,” one viewer wrote.
“She’s beautiful. This is so sad. Praying she finds a wonderful furever home soon,” another commented, with a third adding: “How can that be you are so beautiful sweet girl.”
Mama Eve has been fostered through the Mercy Full Project since January. In that time, the volunteers have developed an understanding of the kind of home she would be best suited to.
“We would love for her to go to a home with other dogs in it, with a fenced-in backyard, with a fence taller than 6 feet or higher,” Hucko said. “One that is active and ready to give her all the love in the world.”
The wait to find that home continues.
