More than 70 Big Lots stores are reopening across 13 states on May 15.
The retailer, known for home goods, furniture, and seasonal products, is seeing stores gradually reopen after over 400 closed in 2024. Big Lots had filed for bankruptcy amid financial pressures from inflation and shifting consumer behavior.
This month’s reopenings follow a significant acquisition of assets earlier this year after Variety Wholesalers, a North Carolina-based retail operator, which purchased 219 locations and two distribution centers.
In a statement on April 4, Lisa Seigies, president and CEO of Variety Wholesalers, said: “We’re thrilled to bring the Big Lots! brand back to life by offering more deals than ever, lots of famous brands and a new apparel department for the entire family.”

In the short term, the stores will continue to operate under the Big Lots brand. Phased updates may introduce operational changes depending on location performance and broader strategic goals.

Who Owns Big Lots?
Following Big Lots’ bankruptcy announcement in 2024, investment firm Gordon Brothers arranged to sell between 200 and 400 of the retail chain’s locations to Variety Wholesalers.
Several other companies have bought leases of closed Big Lots locations including Aldi, Tractor Supply, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and Burlington.
In Variety Wholesalers’ statement, Seigies added: “We’re opening stores quickly so we can serve the community. We know the stores won’t be perfect to start, but each week we’ll add more new products as we build towards the grand opening celebration in the fall. Every time a customer visits Big Lots! we want them to find something new and exciting!”
Why It Matters
These reopenings restore access to affordable retail goods in communities affected by previous closures. They also provide economic stimulus through job creation and the revival of vacant commercial properties.
What’s Next
Additional Big Lots store openings are scheduled through early June, marking a continuation of the phased relaunch that began in April.
